In addition to the highly elastic Bayfit® flexible molded foams, high energy-absorbing foams, known as "slow recovery foams" or "viscoelastic foams", are used in special applications. They are particularly suitable for the manufacture of comfortable cushions, mattresses and special orthopedic parts. These are used mainly to prevent bedsores (sores that occur due to the patient lying in one position for a long time), thus helping the patient to a speedy recovery.
Viscoelastic foams made using Bayfit® show a "memory effect", which causes the foam to very slowly regain its shape after deformation. Exposed to the heat and pressure of a human body, the foam optimally adapts to each individual contour thereby distributing the bodyweight across the greatest possible surface area. The low level of counterpressure ensures optimum pressure distribution. By applying a Baytec® elastomer skin to the mold prior to foaming, the finished molded foam can also be given an additional hygienic outer layer.
Although viscoelastic foams are mainly used in mattresses and pillows, they are also ideally suited for applications in the home and office segment.
The compression curves clearly illustrate the difference between standard foams (HR: high resilience) and viscoelastic (VE) foams: Compared to HR foams, VE foams show a smaller increase in force at higher deformations. The large hysteresis in the VE-foam curve reflects the slow shape recovery of the compressed material.
