Bayfit® Automotive: A welcome passenger

When you sit in a car, you experience various forms of comfort. As far as sitting and hearing comfort are concerned, Bayfit® foams are able to make an important contribution. But other key criteria for the use of Bayfit® flexible foams in modern cars and utility vehicles, apart from comfort, are light weight and safety.

Car seats – Armrests – Head restraints
Car seats, more than any other item of a car interior, are almost always made of the same material: flexible polyurethane molded foam. In fact, well over 90 % of all car seats produced around the world are made of it. In an average car, that represents a weight of 10 kg. With its elasticity and shaping possibilities, polyurethane foam also gives the occupants ergonomic support to ensure that they always "sit properly". Bayfit® Automotive flexible molded foam systems comply admirably with all these requirements. Bayfit® foams dampen vibrations, offer outstanding climate-related comfort and also have excellent load resistance, which means that they do not deteriorate even in long-term service. They can be used to manufacture seat and backrest padding to fit the contours of the body, as well as head restraints and arm rests in all conceivable shapes and hardness grades. Using the multi-zone foam technology, the side edge zones of the seat padding can be made more stable, which means that, despite the centrifugal forces exerted on the driver going fast round a corner, he or she still sits firmly "in the saddle".

The advantages of Bayfit® Automotive for the seat segment:
  • Highly load-resistant with long-term elasticity
  • Can be manufactured in virtually any shape or size
  • No problem with series production – inserts for fixing the cover fabric can be molded in
  • Higher side stability with the multi-zone technology
  • Compliance with the highest emissions and odor specifications

Sound absorption
Quietness is soothing – noise makes you ill and tired. If a driver is exposed over a long period to a loud engine and driving noise, it is not only bad for his or her health, it also constitutes a significant safety risk. BaySystems® tackles the problems of air-borne and solid-borne noise with sound-absorbing polyurethane systems to create more pleasant interior acoustics. The ideal solution here is to use Bayfit® polyurethane foams or Bayflex® polyurethane heavy-layer cladding, either alone or in combination. Ideally – also from the environmental point of view – the component will be made entirely of polyurethane. It will convince even the most critical of acoustic specialists.

In fact, these noise killers spend their lives in the dark and normally remain invisible: They form the sound insulation on the bulkhead behind the dashboard, or the foam backing on carpets and wheel arch shells or they disappear in modules for the engine compartment insulation. With their optimized foam structure and perfect cavity filling, Bayfit® foams offer excellent absorption of air-borne noise. The viscoelastic grades in combination with a heavy-duty layer of Bayflex® SA also results in ideal solid-borne sound and vibration damping.

With the highly filled Bayflex® systems for heavy layers, there is also a choice between two methods of processing. Use can be made either of the classic RIM process or, with state-of-the-art machinery and maximum process flexibility, the spray process – in the form of Bayflex® SP. With both methods, the layer thickness can be varied at every single point on the part as instructed by the acoustic expert.

All products can be processed very economically as moldings with low scrap rates because no time-consuming cutting-to-size is needed. They can also be adjusted to the most complex part geometries and spare the ears – and nerves – of the driver and passengers.

The advantages of Bayfit® Automotive for sound insulation:
  • Damping of air-borne and solid-borne noise
  • Good long-term service properties under high mechanical stresses and extreme climatic influences
  • Elastic, viscoelastic and adhesive grades possible
  • Compliance with the highest emissions and odor specifications
